Memory allocation benchmarks
I'm going to use this thread to put up a bunch of possible benchmarks for memory allocation (C/C++). One that's particularly close to home is Lemur, a tool developed by CMU and UMass (CIIR). I ran it and obtained the following stats with ../app/obj/RetEval rerank_fb_tfidf_param after creating the index with my_test_pos_index.sh -- it really churns through memory, though it doesn't have a very large footprint.

Here's a comparison of resident set size for mozilla, across a number of allocators, including Hoard and the BSD allocator (PHKmalloc). Looks similar to what we've been seeing...
